Sugar cane is almost 90% juice, yet, even when the cane has been cut by revolving cane knives or by a shredder, the fiber retains the liquid like a sponge, and the juice starts flowing only when the prepared and shredded cane is squeezed in the crusher or first mill. From 60 to 70% of cane juice is extracted in the crusher and first mill.
